Why do Catholics confess to a priest instead of just talking to God directly?
You know the faith has a beautiful answer. But in the moment, under the slight pressure of someone genuinely asking, the words don't come as easily as you'd like. The conversation moves on. And later, alone, you think of everything you wished you had said.
The Catholic faith has always been equal to the hardest questions. Two thousand years of Scripture, theology, philosophy, and lived witness give us answers worth giving. The challenge has never been the depth of the tradition. The challenge is explaining it in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday evening.
We know because we lived it. Jake and I each married women raised Protestant. After years of hard conversations, both of them eventually entered the Church. And we learned firsthand how much the right answer, at the right moment, matters.
